This course aims to develop a deep understanding of the diverse nature of the English language by examining its linguistic features and the social backgrounds of English-speaking regions from a historical perspective. Students will also learn how to apply knowledge and perspectives from the history of English to their everyday English study, and will develop the ability to address questions and issues related to English by drawing on an understanding of its historical development.
In order to understand the distinctive features of modern English as a lingua franca, this course examines the various varieties of English that have spread around the world by exploring the historical backgrounds of their expansion and the linguistic characteristics of each variety. In each lecture, students will also engage with specific texts and audio materials to gain an understanding of the nature of English from multiple perspectives. This course builds on 文学講義1 (spring semester), which focuses primarily on the English of the British Isles and its historical development and characteristics.

本講義では、英語の持つ多様な性質や特徴を深く理解することを目的に、英語の言語的特徴や英語が話されている地域の社会背景を歴史的視点から学習する。同時に、普段の英語学習に英語の歴史に関する知識や観点を活用する視点を学び、英語に関する疑問や課題について、英語史の知識を用いて自ら解決する力を養う。

世界共通語となった現代英語の特質を理解するために、イギリス諸島やアメリカ、オーストラリアなど、世界中に広がる英語の様々な変種について、その拡大の歴史的背景を知り、それぞれの変種の言語的特徴を学ぶ。各講義では、具体的な文献や音声等に触れることで、世界に拡大した英語の特質を多角的に学んでいく。本講義の内容は、主にイギリス諸島の英語とその歴史や特徴について学習する文学講義1（春学期）に続くものである。
