This course will cover a range of topics in British literature through its survey from the era of Old English poetry up to the end of the 17th century. The goal of this course is to provide students with wide-ranging, fundamental knowledge of British literature. Students will also learn about basic critical approaches to literary texts by reading representative literary works of each period in the context of their cultural and social backgrounds and analysing their characteristic forms and themes.
In the age before the novel as a genre was born in the 18th century, poetry was the centre of the literary world in Britain. After touching on the social and literary trends of each period in general, we will read its representative literary works, mainly poetry. Classes will generally be conducted in the lecture style according to the handouts distributed in the first class. When appropriate, audio or visual media will be used to supplement students’ experience with the literary works.

本講義は、イギリス文学概説という広いテーマのもと、古英語詩の時代から17世紀末までのイギリス文学を概観し、イギリス文学に関する広い基礎知識を身につけることを目標とする。併せて、文化的、社会的文脈において各時代の代表的な作品を読み、独特の英語表現とテーマを分析することによって、それらの作品を批評的な観点から読解する基礎的な解釈力も育む。

18世紀に小説が登場する以前、イギリス文学は詩を中心に展開した。各時代の社会と文学の全般的動向に触れた後､詩を中心とするその時代の代表作を実際に読む｡基本的には、最初の授業で配布するプリントに沿って講義形式で授業を進めるが、適宜、音声や映像の資料も用いて多角的に作品を味わう。
