This course will cover a range of topics in the wide field of British literature through reviewing British literature from the 18th century leading up to the modern era. The goal of this course is to provide students with wide-ranging, fundamental knowledge of British literature. Students will also learn basic critical approaches to literary texts through the analyses of forms and themes of representative literary works of each period in the context of their cultural and social backgrounds.
Students will gain a general understanding of British literature from the 18th century leading up to the modern era. Classes will be delivered as lectures in line with the assigned textbook. When appropriate, audio or visual media will be introduced to students to supplement their experience with the literary works. Student participation is requested in the form of reaction papers to be turned in during class.

本講義は、イギリス文学概説という広いテーマのもと、18世紀から現代までのイギリス文学史を概観し、イギリス文学に関する広い基礎知識を身につけることを目標とします。そのさい、各時代の文化的、社会的背景に光を当てながら、各作品独特の英語表現とテーマを分析することによって、それらの作品を批評的な観点から読解する基礎的な解釈力も育てます。

18世紀から現代までのイギリス文学史を概観します。基本的には、教科書にゆるやかに沿った講義形式で授業を進めますが、適宜、音声や映像の資料も用いながら多角的に作品に触れます。また、授業時にリアクション・ペーパーを提出してもらうことで、学生の側の参加を求めます。
