This course will cover a range of topics in British literature through reviewing British literature from the 18th century to the present. Students will learn about the cultural, societal, and historical backgrounds of each period before reading iconic works of British literature and analyzing their unique themes and writing styles. Thus, students will be able to understand the significance and position of each work in the context of British literary history.
Students will gain a general understanding of British literature from the rise of the novel in the 18th century to the current movements in the literary world. Classes will generally be conducted in the lecture style, regularly referring to the textbook. When appropriate, audio or visual media will be used to supplement students' experience with the literary works.

本講義は、イギリス文学概説という広いテーマのもと、18世紀から現代までのイギリス文学を概観し、その流れをつかむことを目標とします。そのさい、各時代の文化的、社会的背景に光を当てながら、各作品独特の英語表現とテーマを分析することによって、それらの作品をイギリス文学の代表的な作品と照らし合わせ、その文学史の中に位置づける作業も行ないます。

18世紀における小説の勃興から、現代に至るまでのイギリス文学を概観します。基本的には、教科書に沿った講義形式で授業を進めますが、適宜、音声や映像の資料も用いながら多角的に作品に触れます。
