This course will cover a range of topics in British literature through its survey from the 18th century up to the modern era. The goal of this course is to provide students with wide-ranging, fundamental knowledge of British literature. Students will also learn about basic critical approaches to literary texts by reading representative literary works of each period in the context of their cultural and social backgrounds and analysing their characteristic forms and themes.
Soon after novel as a genre was born in the first half of the 18th century, it took the leading role of literature from poetry and literature became popularized and diversified. Besides, as the English language became a common language in the world, British literature got increasingly internationalized especially after the 20th century. In each class, with such a historical process in mind, after touching on the social and literary trends of each period in general, we will read
its representative literary works. Classes will be generally conducted in the lecture style according to the handouts distributed in the first class. When appropriate, audio or visual media will be used to supplement students’ experience with the literary works.

本講義は、イギリス文学概説という広いテーマのもと、18 世紀から現代までのイギリス文学を概観し、イギリス文学に関する広い基礎知識を身につけることを目標とする。併せて、文化的、社会的文脈において各時代の代表的な作品を読み、独特の英語表現とテーマを分析することによって、それらの作品を批評的な観点から読解する基礎的な解釈力も育む。
This course will cover a range of topics in British literature through its survey from the 18th century up to the modern era. 18 世紀前半にジャンルとして小説が登場すると、まもなく詩から主役の座を奪い、文学が大衆化、多様化するだけでなく、やがて英語が世界の共通語にとなるのに合わせて英文学は特に20 世紀以降ますます国際化してゆく。授業では、そのような歴史的経緯を念頭に置き、まず各時代の社会と文学の全般的動向に触れた後､各時代の代表的文学作品を実際に読む｡基本的には、最初の授業で配布するプリントに沿って講義形式で授業を進めるが、適宜、音声や画像の資料も用いて多角的に作品を味わう。
