【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

　本講義は、アメリカ文学概説という広いテーマのもと、カリキュラム・マップに示された「英語および英米文学・文化について広く深い理解を持つ」ことができるよう、植民地時代から南北戦争後のリアリズム勃興期に至るまでのアメリカ文学史の基礎を習得します。
　そのさい、各時代の文化的、社会的背景に光を当てながら、各作品独特の英語表現とテーマを分析することによって、それらの作品をアメリカ文学の代表的な作品と照らし合わせ、その文学史の中に位置づける作業もおこないます。

　This course will cover a range of topics in the wide field of American literature through reviewing American literature from the colonial era leading up to the rise of realism in the aftermath of the Civil War. In order to deeply understand the English language, British and American literature, and British and American culture as outlined in the curriculum map, students will obtain fundamental knowledge of American literature.
　Students will also learn about each period’s cultural, societal, and historical backgrounds before reading iconic works of American literature and analyzing their unique themes and writing styles. With this knowledge, students will be able to determine the significance and position of each work in the context of American literary history.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

　文学研究を志すためには文学史の流れを習得することが欠かせません。逆説的なことに、歴史へ反旗を翻した文学者や思想家たちこそ歴史を強く意識していたのです。過去と無縁に思える現代に生きる私たちこそ、歴史のなかに現代を見いだすべきでしょう。
　そこで本講義では、植民地時代から南北戦争後のリアリズム勃興期へ至るアメリカ文学史を学習します。作家名や作品名という固有名詞の羅列を暗記するのではなく、文化的、社会的背景とその変化と照らし合わせながら、作家たちの格闘の足跡をみずから追体験します。

　It is vital that one understands the flow of literary history before pursuing literary research. Paradoxically, the literary scholars and thinkers that rebelled against history were the ones most keenly aware of it. Since many of us living in modern society think the past has no connection to us today, one ought to discover our historical connections.
　To achieve that goal, students will study American literature from the colonial era leading into the rise of realism in the aftermath of the Civil War in this course. Specifically, students will study the cultural and social backgrounds of each work as well as experience the changes and difficulties the authors faced rather than simply memorizing author names, titles of works, and other bibliographical information.
