This course explores a range of topics within American literature, spanning from the colonial era to the rise of realism following the Civil War. To deepen their understanding of “the English language, British and American literature, and British and American culture” as outlined in the Curriculum Map, students will gain foundational knowledge of American literature.
Students will examine the cultural, societal, and historical contexts of each literary period before engaging with iconic works of American literature. Through this process, they will analyze the unique themes and writing styles of these texts. Armed with this knowledge, students will be able to assess the significance and place of each work within the broader history of American literature.
Understanding the flow of literary history is essential for conducting meaningful literary research. Paradoxically, the literary scholars and thinkers who rebelled against historical traditions were often those most acutely aware of them. In a modern society where the past is frequently seen as irrelevant, it is crucial to rediscover and appreciate our historical connections.
To this end, this course examines American literature from the colonial era to the rise of realism in the aftermath of the Civil War. Students will investigate the cultural and social contexts of each work and explore the challenges and transformations experienced by the authors. Rather than simply memorizing names, titles, and bibliographical details, students will engage deeply with the historical and literary dynamics that shaped these texts.

本講義は、アメリカ文学概説という広いテーマのもと、カリキュラム・マップに示された「英語および英米文学・文化について広く深い理解を持つ」ことができるよう、植民地時代から南北戦争後のリアリズム勃興期に至るまでのアメリカ文学史の基礎を習得します。
そのさい、各時代の文化的、社会的背景に光を当てながら、各作品独特の英語表現とテーマを分析することによって、それらの作品をアメリカ文学の代表的な作品と照らし合わせ、その文学史の中に位置づける作業もおこないます。

文学研究を志すためには文学史の流れを習得することが欠かせません。逆説的なことに、歴史へ反旗を翻した文学者や思想家たちこそ歴史を強く意識していたのです。過去と無縁に思える現代に生きる私たちこそ、歴史のなかに現代を見いだすべきでしょう。
そこで本講義では、植民地時代から南北戦争後のリアリズム勃興期へ至るアメリカ文学史を学習します。作家名や作品名という固有名詞の羅列を暗記するのではなく、文化的、社会的背景とその変化と照らし合わせながら、作家たちの格闘の足跡をみずから追体験します。
