The goal of this lecture is to acquire essential knowledge of American literature through the direct reading of works while gaining a proper understanding of the systematic flow of literary history. The lecture also aims to deepen students’ understanding of the historical and cultural contexts behind literary works.
The lecture provides an overview of major authors, works, and cultural backgrounds in American literature from the late 19th century to the present, following the progression of the times. For particularly significant works, students will examine the texts directly and be introduced to excerpts in their original language that reflect the distinctive characteristics of the authors.
In addition, we will introduce videos clips in English related to the authors and themes we deal with, as well as clips of works that have been made into films, to help deepen our understanding of American literary history at the level of non-verbal representation.

アメリカ文学に必須の知識を、実際に作品を読みながら正しく身につけるとともに、文学史の体系的な流れを把握する。また、文学作品の背後にある歴史的・文化的なコンテクストの理解を深める。

19世紀後半から現代に至るアメリカ文学の主要な作家や作品、その文化的背景などを時代の流れにそって概説する。とくに重要な作品については実際にテクストを確認し、作家の特徴を反映するような一節を原文で紹介する。
また、扱う作家やテーマに関連する英語の動画、あるいは映画化された作品の映像等を紹介し、非言語の表象レベルにおいても米文学史の理解を深める。
