This course will cover a range of topics in the wide field of American literature by providing students with an overview of American literary history from the end of the 19th century to the modern era in addition to offering basic knowledge of significant authors and literary works.
Students will learn about each period’s cultural, societal, and historical backgrounds before reading iconic works of American literature and analyzing their unique themes and writing styles. With this knowledge, students will be able to understand the significance and position of each work in the context of American literary history.
This class offers an overview of the history of American literature from the end of the 19th century through the modern era, and students will gain basic knowledge for research into American literature. By understanding the historical and social backgrounds of each work, students will become able to draw upon their scholarly knowledge to read the literary works rather than their own arbitrary interpretations.
Although the term “literary history” may sound dull, American literature is full of protagonists whose lives are often tragic and bizarre, offering readers examples of life, both good and bad. In this class, students will not only study American literature as an academic discipline, but also actively use their imagination to experience the lives of others.
The following syllabus lists the important authors of each wave of literary history, but classes will cover a wider range of authors than what is listed on the syllabus.

毎回の授業終わりに20分ほどの時間を設け、レスポンスペーパーの執筆を行なってもらう。そのため、自分の頭で考え、その思考を文章にする力が求められる。ただ、受講の時点でそうした力に不安があっても、学期を通じて思考力と文章作成力は向上していくので、そうした能力を高めたい学生に受講を勧める。
授業に集中する環境作りのため、特別な事情がないかぎりは電子辞書を除く電子機器の使用を控えること（PC、タブレット、スマートフォンなど）。
本科目は、アメリカ文学概説という広いテーマのもと、19世紀末から現代にかけてのアメリカ文学史を概観することで、主要作家・作品に関する基礎的な知識を得る。
各作品独特の英語表現とテーマを分析するだけではなく、各時代の文化的・社会的背景に光を当てることによって、アメリカ文学の主要作品を文学史という大きな流れの中に位置づける作業もおこなう。

19世紀末から現代にかけてのアメリカ文学史を概観し、アメリカ文学研究に必須の知識を身につける。作品の背後にある歴史的・社会的背景を理解することで、自分勝手にではなく、学問の蓄積に依拠しながら、個々の文学作品を読めるようになる。
「文学史」というと無味乾燥に響くかもしれないが、アメリカ文学には数奇で破滅的な人生を歩む主人公が多く存在しており、彼らの物語を概観することで、自分の人生の反面教師とすることが可能になるだろう。本講義では、学問としての文学史を学習するのはもちろんのこと、想像力を用いて他者の生を擬似体験し、個々の文学作品を学生各自の人生に引き寄せて考えてほしい。
以下の授業計画では、文学史的潮流ごとの中心的な作家名を列挙しているが、実際の授業ではより広範なアメリカ作家を網羅する予定である。また、授業の進捗次第で内容が変更される場合があることをご了解いただきたい。
