| 備考/ NotesNotes |
In the genre of the novel, it is generally held that the proper object of narrative attention is not beautiful landscapes or the events that occur within them, but rather the human beings who live in those landscapes and experience those events, along with their inner lives.
If this is so, then at what point does a particular individual become a “human being” in this narrative sense? An infant without language lacks the means to narrate itself, has not yet reached the stage of self-recognition, and does not incorporate the external world into its inside as an object of thought in a verbalisable sense. Given this, at what moment, does the “individual” who can properly become the subject of the novel, or serve as its narrator, come into being?
Taking this set of questions as its point of departure, this course aims to examine representations of infants, children, and adults in British literature from the nineteenth to the twentieth century.
This course examines representations of infants and children in children’s literature written from the nineteenth to the twentieth century, while placing them in dialogue with depictions of infants and children in novels not classified as children’s literature in the same age. Through this comparative approach, the course explores how human subjectivity and individual agency emerge, or are imagined to emerge, and how these processes have been represented in literary form.
The course will focus, as extensively as possible, on works by Charles Dickens―including The Old Curiosity Shop, A Christmas Carol, and David Copperfield―as well as the two Alice books by Lewis Carroll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass), and the Peter Pan works by J. M. Barrie. Through close reading of these texts, this course tries to shed light on the images of childhood invented by adult authors and the forms of child subjectivity constructed within literary narratives.
