The objectives of this course are (1) to provide students with basic knowledge of popular literary genres in 18th and 19th century America, (2) to understand cultural, historical, political backgrounds of the genres, and (3) to interpret some representative texts of each genre and thus enhance students’ skills to read literary works.
A literary genre is an outgrowth of changes and developments of a society. For examples, encounters with the others produced captivity narratives, slave narratives offered an important testimony in the controversy over slavery, and biographies of great men and women were used to establish a national identity. In the class, the instructor will lecture on the literary genres and their representative texts, and their historical, cultural, and political backgrounds through original texts and visual aids.

この授業は、(1)18、19世紀のアメリカの主要な文学ジャンルについての基礎的な知識を身につけ、(2)そのジャンルを生み出した歴史的、文化的、政治的背景を理解しつつ、(3) 各ジャンルの代表的な作品を解釈することを通して文学作品を読む力を養うことを目的とする。

文学ジャンルは社会の変化や発展の産物である。例えば、他者との遭遇が捕囚物語を生み出し、奴隷体験記が奴隷制をめぐる議論に重要な証言をもたらし、偉人伝は国家のアイデンティティーを確立するために用いられた。授業では、原文と映像資料を用いて、文学ジャンルと主要な作品、それらの歴史的、文化的、政治的背景を解説する。
