The objectives of this course are (1) to provide students with a survey of F. O. Matthiessen’s discussion of American Renaissance, (2) to understand the transnational counter-arguments against American Renaissance, and (3) to interpret some representative texts of 19th-century American literature and thus enhance students’ skills to read literary works.
When Francis O. Matthiessen published ＜i＞American Renaissance＜/i＞ in 1941, he chose Emerson, Whitman, Thoreau, Hawthorne and Melville as the great writers of the age because of “their devotion to the possibilities of democracy,” and as a result, established a literary cannon of white male writers. This course will survey Matthiessen’s arguments and explore how the recent critical trends of transnationalism twist the framework and try to expand the horizon of what we call “American” literature.

この授業は、(1) F. O. マシーセンのアメリカン・ルネサンスの議論について概説し (2) アメリカン・ルネサンスに対するトランスナショナルな視点からの様々な反駁を理解し (3) 19世紀アメリカの代表的な作品を解釈することを通して文学作品を読む力を養うことを目的とする。

1941年、F. O. マシーセンは『アメリカン・ルネサンス』を出版し、「民主主義の可能性に献身した」ことを理由に、エマソン、ホイットマン、ソロー、ホーソーン、そしてメルヴィルをその時代の代表的な作家とみなし、その結果、白人の男性作家によるキャノンを確立した。この授業は、マシーセンの議論を概説した上で、近年の批評的潮流であるトランスナショナリズムが、アメリカン・ルネサンスの枠組みをどのように変容させ、また「アメリカ」文学と呼ばれるものの地平を広げたかを探求する。
