The main objective of the lecture is to enable students to develop the ability not only to read various kinds of poems but also to translate their personal impressions into stimulating responses. By writing a response paper at the end of each lecture, students will demonstrate at once the logical thinking process and the ethical responsibility to the poems discussed in the course.
The course will present a wide range of 20th-century North American poets and their works. Students will learn to appreciate the singular “voice” of each poet introduced in each lecture. At the same time, however, students will also find a way to discover and analyze how the common forms of poetry shared by those poets work in various manners. To experience the poems deeply, we will cover a lot of socio-cultural issues as well.

この講義では、英語で書かれた詩を読み、それに親しむだけではなくて、詩から受けた私的な印象を、コメントシートを書くことで、他者にも理解可能であり、また、対話の契機を呼びよせる意見に言語化する練習を行います。論理的な思考力と倫理的な応答力を複合的に発揮できるようになることが、この授業の到達目標です。

この講義では、20世紀のアメリカ詩人たちとその作品を紹介します。目標は、個々の作家や作品の独自性を理解するのみならず、それらのあいだの関係性に、共通点と差異のかさなりを見出そうとする「構え」を作ることです。個々の詩を濃密に、そして立体的に読めるようになるために、講義内容には、アメリカの歴史はもちろんのこと、20世紀以降に、あるいは21世紀の「今」に顕著な文化的・社会的諸問題が含まれます。
