The aim of this course is to develop students' understanding of representative theories of postcolonial studies, to broaden their understanding of and interest in related literary and critical theories, and to foster their ability to study and reflect on these theories on their own.
The course will focus on postcolonial studies, but will also make reference to a number of related or derived literary and critical theories as broadly as possible, in order to broaden the interests of the students. The main focus will be on critics or thinkers such as Edward Said, G. C. Spivak and F. Fanon, but many other important scholars and activists will also be mentioned. The important ideological currents that make up postcolonial studies, such as feminism, Marxism, racism studies and environmentalism, will also be reviewed. They will be discussed not only in academic context, but also in each individual socio-historical context, thereby the relationship between literature and society will be investigated. In the final part of the course, we will critically examine the postcolonial situation of Japan, using Okinawan literature.
The course is basically conducted in a lecture format, but discussion opportunities will be provided wherever possible to encourage active participation. At the end of each week's class, students are asked to complete and submit a response paper, which will be commented on in the following week's class.

まずはしっかりと耳を傾け、じっくり考え、他者に配慮しつつ発言ができる必要があります。
本授業では、ポストコロニアル研究の代表的な理論を理解し、また、関連する文学・批評理論についても広く理解および関心を広げ、自ら学び考察していく力を醸成することを目的とします。

本授業では、ポストコロニアル研究を中心としながら、それに関連するあるいは派生するいくつかの文学・批評理論についてできるだけ幅広く言及し、受講生の関心を広げることに努めます。中心となるのはエドワード・サイードやG. C. スピヴァク、F. ファノンといった批評家あるいは思想家ですが、それ以外の重要な研究者やアクティヴィストにもできるだけ多く言及する予定です。また、フェミニズム、マルクス主義、レイシズム研究、環境主義といったポストコロニアル研究を構成する重要な思想的潮流も概観しますが、アカデミックな議論だけではなく、個別的なアクティヴィズムにも触れ、文学と社会の関係についても考察をしていくつもりです。学期の最後では、それまでの総集編として、沖縄文学をテクストとして、日本のポストコロニアル状況について批判的に検討していきます。
本授業は基本的に講義形式で行われますが、可能な限りディスカッション機会を設け、能動的な参加ができるようにします。毎週の授業の最後にはレスポンスペーパーに記入・提出してもらい、それについて翌週の授業でコメントをします。また、折に触れて内容確認テストを行うこともあります。
