This course aims to introduce students to the Arthurian legend—often regarded as a foundational influence on the world-building of modern fantasy—by examining in depth the evolution of Arthurian traditions, with particular attention to their historical context within the development of British political hegemony and kingship.
The Arthurian legend is one of the best-known narrative traditions in Western Europe. But did “King Arthur” truly exist? This course explores how the Arthurian narratives as we know them today came to be formed, tracing the transformations of the Arthurian tradition over approximately 1,500 years. The primary sources examined in this course range widely, from Welsh traditions and medieval chronicles to Le Morte Darthur by Sir Thomas Malory, a cornerstone of English Arthurian literature, extending to Sōseki Natsume’s Kairo-kō. In addition to textual sources, the course utilizes diverse visual materials, including manuscript illuminations, paintings by the Pre-Raphaelites, and modern film adaptations. Each class is structured around a thematic question, a lecture, the submission of short response papers, and commentary in the following session, so that students’ understanding deepens progressively over the course of the term. Students are encouraged to explore the question of why the Arthurian tradition has endured for so long—and to seek their own answers.

本講義は現代のファンタジー作品の世界観を築いたともいわれるアーサー王伝説について、英国の民族と王権の歴史を関係付けながら、その概要を学ぶことを目標とします。

アーサー王伝説は西欧においてもっともよく知られた伝承です。そもそも「アーサー王」は実在したのでしょうか。本講義ではどのように今日伝わるアーサー王物語が形成されるに至ったのか、およそ1500年間にわたるアーサー王伝承の変容の様相を概観します。扱う史料はウェールズの伝承や中世の年代記、英文学の金字塔サー・トマス・マロリーの『アーサー王の死』から夏目漱石の『薤露行』に至るまで、写本の細密画やラファエル前派の絵画、現代の映画作品など多様な視覚テクストを補助教材としながらアーサー王伝承の世界を紹介します。毎回の「お題」と講義、リアクションペーパーの提出、そして次回の講義での解説を通じて、回を追うごとに学生諸君の理解が深まるように構成しています。なぜアーサー王伝承は生き残ったのか、その解を探してみてください。
