This course aims to develop students' understandings of US-Japan cultural differences and various issues of globalization of American culture.
In this course, we will discuss the ways in which Mark Twain, one of the representative American authors, has been perceived in Japan for more than a century since Meiji era. Twain's literature is in a way an embodiment of American culture, and in particular his introduction of the American issues of race, space, and vernacular languages made it difficult for many Japanese to understand the essence of his literature. As a result, Twain's literature was sometimes distorted and even rejected in accordance with the norms of contemporary Japanese society. In this course, to understand the “Japanization" of Mark Twain, we will closely examine Japanese society and popular culture, particularly the US-Japan cultural relationships and the literary traditions of Japanese juvenile literature of the time.

日米文学・文化の相違について、マーク・トウェインの日本受容を検討することで理解する。同時に今日のアメリカ文化のグローバリゼーションについて考える際のヒントや視点を提供したい。
This course aims to develop students' understandings of US-Japan cultural differences and various issues of globalization of American culture.
明治以降今日まで、日本人がいかなる紆余曲折を経ながらアメリカの国民的作家マーク・トウェインを受容してきたか検討する。トウェイン文学は、アメリカに特徴的な広大な空間、アメリカが抱えてきた人種の問題、アメリカ独特の言葉や言い回しなど、背景となるアメリカ文化と密接につながっている。従って、アメリカと文化様式や伝統を異にする日本人にとっては、作品のエッセンスを十分に理解することが難しかった。その結果、日本人にとって受け入れやすい側面のみが強調されたり、日本人が理解しやすいよう内容を改変するといったことが頻繁に行われた。そういった、日本人によるトウェイン文学の削除や強調、改変をみていくことは、即ち日米の文学や文化の伝統や特徴の相違そのものを検討していくことに他ならない。従って、本講義では、特に日本の文学や文化の伝統、さらに同時代の日本の社会状況や大衆文化などに目を配りつつ、日本版のトウェイン作品が同時代の文化・社会状況をいかに反映しているのか、原作との比較を交えながら検討していく。そうすることで、同時に、日米文学・文化の相違や、日本の児童文学・文化の功罪をも考えていく。
