Comparative literature is the study of literature that crosses various boundaries, including language, national borders, cultural spheres, genres, and media. This course aims to help students develop a deeper understanding of the connections between American and Japanese literature, transcending these boundaries.
Students will begin by examining key figures in American literary history, such as Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, and William Faulkner, and exploring the relationship between their works and Japanese literature. Particular attention will be given to Haruki Murakami's role as both a translator and a cultural mediator, introducing American writers to Japanese readers.
The course will also explore the influence of Japanese literature and culture on American literature through the works of Shusaku Endo and Haruki Murakami. Finally, students will analyze the complex relationship between Japanese and American cultures as depicted in a work by Ruth Ozeki, a Japanese American writer.
In addition, students will engage with critical concepts central to comparative literary studies, including influence, reception, intertextuality, and adaptation.

「比較文学」という学問をご存知ですか。ひとまず、言語、国境（文化圏）、ジャンル、メディア形式、学問領域といった既存のカテゴリーを積極的に横断しながら、様々な文化的な表現を考察しようとするのが比較文学、とご紹介しておきます。
この授業では、英語と日本語、そして、アメリカと日本という境界を越え、アメリカ文学と日本文学の関係性について新たな理解に至ることを目指します。まず、アメリカ文学史上でも重要な位置を占める三人の作家、エドガー・アラン・ポー、ウォルト・ホイットマン、ウィリアム・フォークナーに焦点を絞り、彼等の作品と日本文学との関わりを理解します。そして、逆に、日本の作家である遠藤周作、村上春樹、そして最後に、日系のアメリカ人であるルース・オゼキの作品を通して、文学テクストに現れるアメリカ文学・文化と日本文学・文化の今日的でより複雑な関係の有り様もみていきます。各作品の関係を考察しながら、「影響」や「受容」、「間テクスト性」、「アダプテーション」といった比較文学的アプローチを検討するために必要な批評的コンセプトについても確認していきます。
