World literature in English or ❝literatures in englishes❞ is an expanding field of study that involves diverse peoples and languages, easily crossing the geopolitical boundaries of nation-states, transforming local cultures, creating new ❝englishes❞ and new perspectives of the changing world. Reading several excerpts and short stories and autobiographical essays closely, students will learn the rich complexity of the field which grew out of the history of colonization, broadening their perspective through discovery of personal voices telling individual yet globally shared historical experiences. This term we will focus in particular on the direct aftermath of colonialism, reading from the works of late the 19th to early 20th century.
In this class we will read from the works of writers with various backgrounds; short stories with backgrounds of 19th century American South and British West Indies, South Pacific islanders’ encounter with European cultures, reflections of an Indian writer during British Raj, and experiences of colonial elites in Britain and Europe. They will show vivid descriptions of conflicts as well as new cultures emerging from inevitable confrontations of different peoples. (the number and volume of works will be decided in accordance with the number and interest of participants).

予習 preparation： テキストの指定箇所をざっと読み、疑問点を明らかにしてくること。標準として1．5時間程度を想定。
復習 review： オンライン課題・期末課題として、授業でとりあげたテキストの分析を課すので、授業後に簡単でも復習し要点をまとめておくことを推奨する。課題執筆時の時間を含めて全体的に平均して 0.5 時間程度を想定。approx. 0.5 hour

日本語による大学レベルの授業を理解できる日本語能力、大学レベルの英語テキストを辞書を用いて理解できる英語能力
電子辞書か紙の辞書を持参（スマホ使用は教室内では許可しないことにします）
オンライン授業を部分的にとりいれて行います。基本的にオンデマンド型（動画配信）とし、視聴コメント提出で出席とみなされ、オンライン課題の評点がつきます。対面・オンラインあわせて5回以上出席しない人は診断書等で特別の理由を認められないかぎり成績評価の対象外となります。シラバス記載の対面とオンラインの予定には変更の可能性がありますので、授業中のお知らせとLMSのアナウンスメントに注意のこと。
英語圏文学は、多くの民族や異なる言語文化を巻きこみ、地理的・政治的境界を容易に越え、各地のローカル文化とともに変容しながら、文化領域として拡大をつづけている。植民地支配に端を発するこの領域の豊かさと複雑さを作品精読により学び、個人的経験を通して各社会の、そしてそれらのつながりの歴史的背景を深く知り、楽しみながら世界に視野を広げる。この学期はとくに19世紀後半から20世紀前半頃までの小説やエッセイを題材に、「植民地支配の余波」に焦点を当てる。

英語圏各地に背景を持つ作家たちの短篇小説や長篇抜粋、自伝的エッセイを複数とりあげる。19世紀のアメリカ合衆国南部、英領カリブ海植民地を舞台にした短編小説、西洋文化との出会いによる変化を語る南太平洋の島嶼地域住民の自伝、さらに独立直前期のインドについてのインド人作家の回想、イギリスやヨーロッパにおける植民地出身者の経験を物語る作品など、異文化接触により生じる紛争と新たな文化の可能性を鮮やかに描く作品に注目する（参加人数により作品数・内容は加減する）。講義形式に一部演習的な手法をとりいれて参加者の積極的な授業パフォーマンスをうながす。関連主題についての映像資料も随時紹介していく。
