World literature in English or ❝literatures in englishes ❞ is an expanding field of study that involves diverse peoples and languages, easily crossing the geopolitical boundaries of nation-states, transforming local cultures, creating new ❝ englishes ❞and new perspectives of the changing world. Reading several excerpts and short stories closely, students will learn the rich complexity of the field which grew out of the history of colonization, broadening their perspective through discovery of personal voices telling individual yet globally shared historical experiences. This term we will focus in particular on recent trend in this field from the mid-20th century onwards.
In this class we will read from the works of writers with various backgrounds such as South Asia, East Africa, West Africa, Scotland, Australia, the Caribbean Sea, from the mid-20th century to today: the descendants of immigrants living in multicultural metropolises, the survivors of conflict zones critically observing the lingering effects of colonial rule, poets and writers who have transformed the literary values of Black English, and contemporary indigenous writers We will focus on works that vividly depict places where different people live and interact (the number and volume of works will be decided in accordance with the number and interest of participants).

日本語による大学レベルの授業を理解できる日本語能力、大学レベルの英語テキストを辞書を用いて理解できる英語能力
電子辞書か紙の辞書を持参（スマホでのオンライン辞書使用は教室内では許可しないことにします）
オンライン授業を部分的にとりいれて行います。その場合基本オンデマンド型（動画配信）とし視聴コメント提出で出席とみなされ、オンライン課題の評点がつきます。対面・オンラインあわせて5回以上出席しない人は診断書等で特別の理由を認められないかぎり成績評価の対象外となります。シラバス記載の対面とオンラインの予定には変更の可能性がありますので、授業中のお知らせとLMSのアナウンスメントに注意のこと。
英語圏文学は、多くの民族・言語を巻きこみ、地理的・政治的境界を容易に越え、各地のローカル文化とともに変容しながら、文化領域として拡大をつづけている。植民地支配に端を発するこの領域の豊かさと複雑さを作品精読により学び、社会的問題を個人的経験として深く知り、楽しみながら世界に視野を広げる。この学期はとくに20世紀中頃から最近の動向に焦点を当てる。

英語圏各地に背景を持つ作家たちの短篇小説を複数とりあげる。20世紀中頃以降に描かれた、現代の多文化都市で生きる移民の子孫たち、紛争地帯の日常と植民地支配の影響、黒人英語の文学的価値を変革してきた詩人や作家、先住民族の現代作家など、異なる者がともに生き関わり合う場所を鮮やかに描く作品に注目する（参加人数により作品数・内容は加減する）。
