In this class, students will explore the historical development of English, focusing primarily on the evolution of English vocabulary, especially word meanings.
This course explores the historical development of English vocabulary by studying one chapter (or occasionally half a chapter) per session from the textbook English Historical Semantics (Edinburgh University Press, 2015). The chapters cover a wide range of topics, including color terms, collocations, phraseology, metaphor and metonymy, syntactic structures, language and gender, and the future of language. By examining these topics, students will gain a multifaceted understanding of how English vocabulary and meanings have evolved, while also learning key theories, concepts, and terminology in linguistics and English language history. The course will also involve frequent use of the Oxford English Dictionary, helping students become proficient in its use and equipping them to independently research the history of words. 主には英語の語彙（特に語の意味）の観点から、英語の発達の歴史を理解する。
In this class, students will explore the historical development of English, focusing primarily on the evolution of English vocabulary, especially word meanings.
この授業では、English Historical Semantics（Edinburgh University Press, 2015）という英文のテキストを毎回1章（章によってはその半分）を読みながら、英語の語彙の発達史を学びます。各章の話題は幅広く、色彩語、コロケーション、語法（phraseology）、比喩（隠喩・換喩）、統語構造、言語の性差、言語の未来など多岐に渡ります。こうした内容を見ながら、複眼的に英語の語彙・意味の発達を見るとともに、言語学と英語史の様々な理論、考え方、用語を学びます。また、Oxford English Dictionaryをたびたび参照しながら、その使い方に慣れ、自身でも語の歴史を調べられるようにします。テキストの詳細は以下で確認できます。
