In this class, students will explore the historical development of English, focusing primarily on the evolution of English vocabulary.
This course uses the English-language textbook An Introduction to English Lexicology (Laurie Bauer, Edinburgh University Press, 2021). Over the course of the semester, we will read approximately half a chapter (about 10 to 20 pages) per class from the six chapters of the book, focusing on vocabulary in order to learn about the historical development of English and how this development has contributed to the formation of present-day English vocabulary.
While the book is specifically concerned with lexicology, it covers a wide range of topics, including issues surrounding words (Chapter 1), word formation (Chapter 2), historical development (Chapter 3), meaning (Chapter 4), pronunciation and spelling (Chapter 5), and the complexities of English vocabulary (Chapter 6). Through engagement with these topics, we aim to deepen our understanding of both the history of English and its present-day state.

【復習】毎回の授業後、復習としてじっくりと読み直し、また、関心を持った事項を自身で深めてください。毎回の課題として、授業の要約とリアクションペーパーを提出します。その他、授業に関連する課題を提出してもらうこともあります。

In this class, students will explore the historical development of English, focusing primarily on the evolution of English vocabulary.
この授業では、An Introduction to English Lexicology（Laurie Bauer, Edinburgh University Press, 2021）という英文のテキスト（全6章）を概ね毎回半章（10～20頁程度）読みながら、語彙に着目して英語の発達史と共に、それがどのように現在の英語の語彙の形成に寄与しているかを学びます。本書は語彙に特化しながらも、語のめぐる諸議論（Ch1）、新語形成（Ch2）、発達史（Ch3）、意味（Ch4）、発音と綴り（Ch5）、英語の語彙が持つ複雑さ（Ch6）、と幅広い話題を扱います。こうした内容を見ながら、英語の歴史と現在についての理解を深めたいと思います。テキストの詳細は以下で確認できます。
