The aim of this course is to help students understand World Englishes in terms of their historical development and linguistic characteristics.
As the British Empire expanded from the 17th century onwards, the language spoken by its people spread across the globe. In this course, we will explore how the English language has established itself in the areas where it is currently spoken as a mother tongue or an official language, as well as the characteristics of these Englishes.

世界のさまざまな地域で話されている英語、「世界の英語」の歴史的な成り立ちとその特徴を理解する。
The aim of this course is to help students understand World Englishes in terms of their historical development and linguistic characteristics.
17世紀以降のイギリスの海外進出とともに、その人々が話す言葉が世界各地へと広まっていった。この授業では、現在母国語として、あるいは公用語として、英語が使用されている国々に英語がどのように定着したのかという歴史的な流れとともに、さまざまな地域に定着した英語がが持つ特徴について学んでいく。
