We will examine the structure of English vocabulary and grammar from the perspective of historical linguistics.
We will overview how the Germanic languages including Old English developed from Proto-Indo-European and how Modern English derived from Old English via Middle English, focussing on vocabulary and grammar. In this process, we will also address various issues relating to Indo-European comparative linguistics, English and Germanic etymology, Old and Middle English, and Modern English grammar.

英語の語彙や文法について、その構造や特徴を歴史的観点から考察する。
We will examine the structure of English vocabulary and grammar from the perspective of historical linguistics.
英語は究極的にはインド・ヨーロッパ祖語から派生した言語ですが、この授業では、印欧語比較言語学の基礎知識について学びつつ、インド・ヨーロッパ祖語からゲルマン語や英語がどのようにして発達したか、また、そのような発達が英語の構造にどのような影響を与えたかについて、特に文法と語彙に焦点を当てながら考察する。その過程において、印欧語比較言語学や語源学、古英語、中英語、現代英語の文法・語法等についての諸問題についても扱う。
