The goal of this course is to help students understand the history of the English language and acquire basic knowledge of Old English and Modern English. By studying the history of the English language, students will deepen their understanding of various phenomena in Modern English with insights into the development of English.
Students will study Old English with reference to aspects of lexis, morphology, phonology, and syntax. Using the knowledge acquired about the structure of the language, students will be able to read Old English texts. The course will also analyze the historical changes in the English language through a comparison of Old English and Modern English.

本講義では、英語の歴史について理解を深め、現代英語の祖である古英語に関する基本的な知識を習得することを目標とする。英語史を学ぶことによって、現代英語に見られる諸現象についての理解を深める。
The goal of this course is to help students understand the history of the English language and acquire basic knowledge of Old English and Modern English. By studying the history of the English language, students will deepen their understanding of various phenomena in Modern English with insights into the development of English.
古英語について、語彙・形態・音韻・統語といった側面に焦点を当て、古英語の構造について学ぶ。あわせて、平易な古英語文章の読解練習を行うとともに、。古英語と現代英語との比較を通して、英語という言語の歴史的変化について考察する。
