【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

ヴィクトリア朝の「家庭教師」を主人公とした小説を読む。19世紀の英国を舞台にした代表的作品を幾つか取り上げ、その抜粋を原文で読みながら紹介する。ヴィクトリア朝小説において、女性家庭教師（ガヴァネス）はポピュラーなキャラクターであり、「小説」というジャンルの発展に重要な役割を果たした存在でもある。本講義では代表的なガヴァネス小説のほか、ゴシックや怪奇の系譜に連なる作品、また男性教師の小説も取り上げる。ガヴァネスは知的なヒロインであるが、悪女や謎めいた女性としても描かれる。また男性教師はそのパロディとして登場することもある。そうした19世紀当時の女性像やジェンダーの問題を明らかにするほか、小説の発展や系譜といった文学史の基本的な流れも確認したい。本授業は、現代の英国文化に受け継がれる英文学の一端に触れることで、まずは英国文化の特質を理解し、ひいては世界の文化の多様性や異文化コミュニケーションについての理解を深めることを目標とする。

This course introduces you to some of the well-known Victorian governess novels. The governess was one of the most familiar characters in Victorian literature and represented the intelligent and independent female figure of the middle class, as well as embodying her lonely, precarious, and strange position in the patriarchal society. We will also focus on a novel featuring a male master, and some sensation and gothic novels as well. The course will first study the original texts carefully by reading some extracts. It will then outline the historical background or give an overview of the literary history. The course will be helpful to students who want to study British literature and culture, and furthermore, to explore the diversity of modern global culture and communication through the study.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

初回のイントロダクションの後、基本的には2～3週で1つの作品を紹介しながら「家庭教師」の小説群を概観する。取りあげる小説家は、シャーロット・ブロンテ、アン・ブロンテ、W・M・サッカレー、エレン・ウッド、ウィルキー・コリンズ、ヘンリー・ジェイムズなどの予定。それぞれ代表的な１作品を選び、その抜粋を原文で読む。原文を読む作業は受講生1人1人が精読する作業となり、まずはその抜粋を手がかりに各自が課題に取り組む。その課題は毎回必ず提出してもらう。一方、講義では視覚的なイメージを取り込みつつ、当時の社会階級や経済などガヴァネスや教師にまつわる歴史的事実を概観する。また、小説における階級と結婚、リアリズム小説とゴシック小説の関係、語りの手法など幾つかのテーマに沿って講義する。なお、本授業を受講する学生には、立教大学の国際交流ラウンジやインターネット上のSNS・掲示板等を利用した双方向的な異文化理解を実践することが求められている。

The first class will be a short introduction to the whole course, and to the practice of interactive understanding of the modern global culture, so attendance is necessary. From the second week, we will start reading some of the well-known works of Victorian governesses and masters. (The list of the texts is given in the course schedule below.) In each class we will first read a couple of extracts from the text, and then its social and historical context will be discussed. We will look at desires and anxieties of the governesses at the time and the way the novelists explored their concern through their fictional works, while using some literary techniques. Students need to read the original texts every time and answer some questions for their own task, and the result will be included in the course assessment.

【授業時間外（予習・復習等）の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

毎回の原文抜粋については辞書を用いながら自分でできる限り文章を読み(各回約2時間)、また必ず課題も含めた全体の復習をして (各回約2時間)試験に備えること。授業にも辞書を持ってくること。また、国際交流ラウンジやSNS・インターネットサイトなどを通じて、ヴィクトリア朝の文化について自ら調べ、英国を含めた世界各国の文化の多様性や交流の意義を体験的に理解してもらう。
