【授業の目標 / Course Objectives】

18世紀から19世紀に書かれた英国の幽霊・怪奇小説について概観する。幽霊などの怪奇・幻想のモチーフは、イギリスにおいて18世紀以降小説の発展に重要な役割を果たしている。18世紀の「ゴシック・ロマンス」の登場からヴィクトリア朝の「ゴースト・ストーリー」の隆盛まで、幾つか有名な小説の抜粋を原文で読み、時代の考察も含めて概観する。それぞれの小説における幽霊など怪奇的存在の果たす役割から、小説という虚構における「幽霊」の意義について、さらにはイギリス小説における幽霊・怪物表象の変遷について概観する。本授業は、現代の英国文化に伝わる幽霊の表象文化の一端に触れることで、まずは英国文化の特質を理解し、ひいては世界の文化の多様性や異文化コミュニケーションについての理解を深めることを目標とする。

This course introduces you to some of the late eighteenth-century Gothic romance and Victorian ghost fiction by reading extracts from well-known English texts. It aims to give an overview of many types of representation of ghosts and ghostly figures, or monsters, and consider their roles and meanings in the fictional work in prose. It will also outline the historical background to provide students with materials that will make these novels more interesting to read. The general framework that is set for this course is to offer to students one of the opportunities for studying British literature and culture, and furthermore, for exploring the diversity of modern global culture and communication through the study.

【授業の内容 / Course Contents】

初回のイントロダクションの後、1，2回ごとにテーマあるいは作品を決めて概観する。18世紀後半からヴィクトリア朝世紀末まで、幾つか代表的な作品の有名場面を取り上げ、まずはその原文抜粋を手掛かりに、幽霊・怪物と物語の関係を整理する。原文を読む作業は受講生1人1人が精読する作業となる。さらに視聴覚資料（DVDなど映像資料）を用いてイメージをつかんでもらったあと、当時の社会的および文学史的な背景について講義し、そうした背景と幽霊・怪物表象がどのように関わっているかを吟味する。また、英国社会が成熟する時代に、幽霊や怪物の物語が流行した理由などについて考察する。
毎回授業の最後には課題に取り組んでもらい、精読・講義の内容を踏まえた上で回答し、提出してもらう。なお、本授業を受講する学生には、立教大学の国際交流ラウンジやインターネット上のSNS・掲示板等を利用した双方向的な異文化理解を実践することが求められている。

The first class will be a short introduction to the whole course, and to the practice of interactive understanding of the modern global culture, so attendance is necessary. From the second week, we will start reading some of the well-known scenes of the works from the late eighteenth-century to the end of the nineteenth century. We will start from the historic overview of the English ghost novels and stories, beginning with exploring their origin in Gothic romance. We will then move on to explore the history of their development in the Victorian period. Some of the famous Victorian novelists are Charles Dickens, the Brontës, Bram Stoker, etc.. (The list of the texts is given in the course schedule below.)
In each class we will first read a couple of extracts from the text, and then the social and historical context will be discussed while being focused on the representation of ghostly figures and monsters. Students need to read the original texts every time and answer some questions for their own task, and the result will be included in the course assessment.

【授業時間外（予習・復習等）の学修 / Study Required Outside of Class】

毎回の原文抜粋については辞書を用いながら自分でできる限り文章を読み(各回約1時間)、また必ず課題も含めた全体の復習をして (各回約1時間)試験に備えること。授業にも辞書を持ってくること。また、国際交流ラウンジやSNS・インターネットサイトなどを通じて、幽霊の表象や文化について自ら調べ、英国を含めた世界各国の文化の多様性や交流の意義を体験的に理解してもらう。
