The aim of this course is to help students acquire a deep understanding of popular culture (music and films) in the U.S. and a critical ability to analyze its aesthetic as well as political dimensions. This course will also explore the present diversity of world cultures, state of communication between cultures, and issues faced by the multicultural world.
The first half of this course explores the aesthetic and political implications of the vocal music that became popular in the States during the 1950’s and 60’s. The oldies--a variety of music that fits neither the definition of rock nor soul music--are often thought of as simple, commercial entertainment products. As a result, they are excluded from studies of both American pop music and the Cold War era. However, this music captured in a democratic manner the emotions of ordinary citizens that lived during the turbulent era. In this course, students will discover various themes shared among American oldies and conduct intensive readings of the work of singers like Patti Page and Bobby Vinton as well as that of doo-wop choral groups.
The latter half of this course attempts a close reading of Dumbo (1941), one of the earliest and the most sophisticated Disney animated classics. We will explore the ways in which the little elephant represents a socially marginalized presence in terms of disability, race, class, and sexuality. In order to examine the film's symbolic dimensions, we will draw on critical methodologies such as disability studies, animal studies, queer theory, and psychoanalysis. In addition to Dumbo, special attention will be given to Mickey Mouse shorts, Pinocchio, The Lion King, The Bells of Notre Dame, Beauty and the Beast, and Winnie the Pooh.
Students in taking this course are also encouraged to use the Rikkyo University international exchange lounge, internet SNS and bulletin boards, and other interactive media to put their understanding of different cultures into practice.

アメリカの大衆文化（音楽と映画）に関する知識を深め、その審美性と政治性を分析する際に有用となる批評の方法論を学ぶ。あわせて、世界の文化の多様性や異文化コミュニケーションの現状や課題を理解する。

講義の前半では、1950年代から60年代にかけての米国で流行したヴォーカル中心のポピュラー音楽作品について，その審美的・政治的なメッセージ性を考える。同時代のロックにもソウルにも分類されないいわゆるオールディーズは，これまでしばしば通俗的・商業的な娯楽作品とみなされ，米国のポピュラー音楽史からも冷戦期の文化研究からも排除されてきた。だがそれらの楽曲は，ある意味，激動の時代を生きた一般庶民の心情を民主的にすくい取っていたように思われる。本講義では，当時の楽曲に共通するいくつかのテーマを抽出し，Patti PageやBobby Vintonやドゥーワップ系のコーラスグループなど，さまざまな歌い手の作品を精査する。
講義の後半では、ディズニーの古典的名作である『ダンボ』（1941年）の徹底的な精読を試みる。巨大な耳という、規範を逸脱した身体的特徴を持つダンボは、それによって差別を受けるしょうがい者であると同時に、アフリカ系アメリカ人を象徴するカラスたちと交流を持つ。一方で彼は、サーカスの仕事に従事する（ローズヴェルト政権下の）労働者でもあり、そのサーカスとは、道化が化粧や女装をする性的な転覆の空間でもある。こうした『ダンボ』の諸相を読み解くうえでは、障害研究、動物研究、クィア批評、精神分析といった批評的参照枠が有益となる。さらに、初期のミッキーマウス映画や『ピノキオ』、『ライオン・キング』、『ノートルダムの鐘』、『美女と野獣』、『くまのプーさん』なども視野に収めつつ、作品と批評理論のあいだを柔軟に往還することで、アメリカ文化の本質的な一局面に肉薄することを目指したい。
また、当授業を受講する学生には、立教大学の国際交流ラウンジやインターネット上のSNS・掲示板等を利用した双方向的な異文化理解を実践することが求められる。
