This lecture explores key themes essential to understanding the characteristics of American culture. Central to the course is the concept of “diversity,” a defining feature of American society and culture, examined through literature, films, paintings, and other media. In today’s rapidly evolving landscape of information technology and globalization, it is crucial to grasp the global significance of American cultural expansion. The course delves into foundational themes such as “The American Founding and Democracy,” “Immigration and Multiethnic Culture,” and “American Heroes and the American Dream.” It also examines the “globalization” of American culture, with particular attention to its influence on Japan, beginning in the Meiji era. Additionally, the lecture addresses the challenges of discrimination and prejudice in building a diverse society. By exploring the history of Japanese-Americans and wartime propaganda between the U.S. and Japan, students will critically consider what it means for different cultures to coexist in an interconnected world.

本講義では、アメリカ文化の特色を理解する上で重要な、幾つかのテーマを中心に考えていきます。特に、「多様性」というアメリカの文化的・社会的特徴を、文学、映画、絵画作品などを適宜紹介しつつ解説していきます。情報・コミュニケーション技術や世界市場の飛躍的な進展を迎えた今日、アメリカ文化の世界への拡大がもつ意味について理解を深めることは非常に重要です。具体的には、「アメリカの建国と民主主義」、「移民・多民族文化」、「アメリカン・ヒーロー（アメリカン・ドリーム）」といったテーマに加え、明治以降、アメリカ文化の多大な影響を受けてきた日本の例を題材に、アメリカ文化の「グローバリゼーション」についても取り上げる予定です。また本講義では多様な社会を構築していく上でアメリカが直面した差別や偏見の問題、特に日系アメリカ人の歴史や、日米の戦時プロパガンダの問題を重点的に扱い、異文化が共存していくとはいかなることなのかについて熟考してもらいます。
