To develop an understanding of the diversity of “English Culture” by learning about the society of New Zealand, which has historically changed from “Britain of the South” to “a Pacific country,” and the deeper layers of the country’s culture based on that of the indigenous Maori people.
This course introduces various aspects of the society and the culture of New Zealand with their history. While New Zealand is a popular destination for English training programs, it has two more official languages: Maori language, spoken by the indigenous Maori people, and NZ sign language. This point shows the awareness of the society toward social justice, but it also can be a vindication. Topics such as this are considered throughout the course. It is recommended that students taking this course also plan on registering for Lectures on Literature 40 English Culture 2.

配付資料や指示した参考文献等を熟読し、興味のあるテーマについては自分の頭で考え、自分の目で見、自分の足で調べる心構えをもって授業に臨みましょう。

「南海の英国」から「太平洋国家」へと変貌と遂げたニュージーランド社会の成り立ちや、先住民マオリの文化を基層とするその国民文化の深層を学び、「英語圏文化」の多様性に対する理解を深めます。

英語研修地先として人気が高いニュージーランドですが、この国には英語以外にもう２つの公用語があります。それは先住民マオリの言語、つまりマオリ語と手話です。これは、まさに現代ニュージーランド社会の社会正義に対する意識の高さを示すともいえますが、ある種のエクスキューズにもなっています。本授業では、こうしたニュージーランド社会や文化の成り立ちや諸相を明らかにしていきます。なお、本講義の履修生は「文学講義40 英語圏文化2」とあわせて履修することが望ましいです。
