Notes

【Course Objectives】

Students will reflect upon the substance of cultures, experience them, and bring to their awareness the formation of themselves. Students will determine position of European German cultures in historical context or compare them to Japanese cultures in Asia. To do that, students will learn how to research literature documents, conduct field works, and construct theories.

【Course Contents】

Even though students are free to choose their research and presentation subjects, eventually they will have to write their graduation thesis. Students will advance their studies while bearing in mind of their thesis. Because of that, the seminar will be organized in the following processes. Year 2: In spring and autumn semesters, students will choose subjects they are interested in. They will present their observations and findings based on literatures written in Japanese language. Year 3: Students will select literatures in German language suitable for their chosen subjects. Students will quote and translate these literatures into Japanese before presenting their observations and findings. Year 4: Whenever necessary, students will continue adapting, quoting, and translating literatures from German to Japanese. They will present parts of the chapters and paragraphs from their graduation thesis. Researching literatures, cultures, and thoughts requires students to cultivate their mentalities to verify and provide evidences based on texts and items. Searching for evidences requires movements, mentally and physically, thus making it similar to travelling. Occasionally students may travel to museums, operas, shrines, or temples.
