Students will acquire advanced German reading skills through close reading of various types of texts, including travelogues, cultural criticism on literature and art, and political propaganda. The class also aims to deepen students' understanding of German-speaking cultures in terms of cross-cultural representations.
What is the historical relationship between Germany and Japan, and how have they interacted with each other? How has Japan been represented in Germany? Students will read a selection of representative German documents from the 17th to the 20th century that relate to this theme, and consider the significance of studying different cultures.

旅行記、文学や美術に関わる文化評論、さらに政治的プロパガンダなど、さまざまな種類のテキストを精読し、高度なドイツ語読解能力を習得する。また、異文化表象という観点からドイツ語圏文化の理解を深めることを目標とする。

ドイツと日本は歴史的にどのような関係を結び、どのように交流してきたのか。また、ドイツにおいて日本はどのように見られ、表象されてきたのか。授業では、このテーマに関わる、17世紀から20世紀までの代表的なドイツ語文献（抜粋）を読んでいく。鎖国の時代から、相互関係が深まる20世紀に至るまでの日本像の変遷をたどりつつ、異文化を学ぶことの意義を考える。
