This lecture aims to
(1) acquire knowledge about German history and culture during Mori Ogai’s studies there and at the same time to understand Japanese situations in a relative context and
(2) understand Ogai’s “German trilogy” more deeply through his experiences in Germany and
(3) explain how modern terms and conceptions such as“individualism,”“nature,” “love,” “life,” and “freedom” have been established.
The topic of this lecture is “Mori Ogai's view of Germany”. The focus is on his studies in Germany [1884-88]. It covers not only his medical and literary activities, but also various cultural experiences such as behavior, food and clothing, etc. Above all, his life in major German cities such as Leipzig, Dresden, Munich and Berlin is taken into account in order to make it clear how Germany seemed to him in its cultural diversity.

・講義科目ですが、受講生の意見等を聞きながら、双方向の授業運営を目指します。
・森鴎外が留学した時代のドイツの歴史と文化を理解し、同時に当時の日本の諸状況を相対的に把握できるようになる。
・森鴎外の「ドイツ三部作」（『舞姫』『うたかたの記』『文づかひ』）を、鴎外の留学体験を通じて、〈ドイツの側から〉理解できるようになる。
・「個人」や「自然」、あるいは、「愛」と「生」、そして「自由」など、近代という時代を標榜するタームが、いかに日本へ移入されたのか理解できるようになる。

この講義のテーマは、「森鴎外が見たドイツ」です。鴎外のドイツ留学（1884～1888年）に焦点を当て、彼がドイツで何を体験したのか、専門の医学や文学にとどまらず、政治や学問、風俗やファッション、食事にいたるまで多様な文化史的見地から探っていく予定です。
特に、鴎外の都市体験に重点を置き、ライプチヒ～ドレスデン～ミュンヘン～ベルリンなど各所に滞在していた事実を踏まえ、彼が身をもって感じたドイツ文化の多様性を論じることになるでしょう。 同時に、「ドイツ三部作」とひとくくりにされがちな彼の文学作品を、当時の諸都市の実相を考慮しつつ分析します。
