Students will deepen their knowledge about arts, literature and culture in modern German-speaking areas, especially Prussia with focusing on the establishing of metropole in the era of modernism and contemporary movements. Students would understand meaning and points of each topics while analyzing handled issues and its impact on our present-day society.
(Berlin Story) This course introduces literature and art/culture movements in the era of german modernism (Berliner Moderne) and contemporary works, especially deal with "Berlin" as metropole. In the course, we also focus on the sense of big city (Großstadt) and people that has been developed intensively by Weimar classics as well as by entire German modernism and culture. We combine texts of German-language literature with cultural, historical and sociological issues, thus opening up interesting new perspectives.
The class will focus on history of German speaking world from 19-21 centuries that are faced and struggled with various issues. To do that, literature and art works with various visual materials will be used, as its attentions are especially given to the rising nationalism of modern age and its establishment of gender norms.

近現代ドイツの歴史と文化を、現代と照らし合わせつつ学びます。ドイツ語圏の人々の生活ぶりや価値観から、21世紀の日本に住む私たちがどのような示唆に与ることができるのかを分析し思考できるようになることが授業の目標です。

【ベルリンの物語】２度の大戦と都市の分断・再統一を経験したドイツの首都ベルリンは、世界中で、圧倒的な強度で描かれ続けているメトロポール（メトロポリス／大都会）です。この授業では、ベルリンを舞台とする文学作品や、彼の地で展開した芸術運動等を通して、19 世紀後半〜現代に至るまでのベルリンの表象の様相と、変化する社会の内実に迫ります。
【扱う作品・内容】
・19世紀末〜20世紀のドイツ語圏の文学作品、時系列に沿って扱います。
作品・現象は19 世紀後半から21世紀まで、ほぼ時系列的に進みます。
・19世紀のプロイセン／ドイツの歴史と、当時の市民階級／教養市民の社会通念、教育制度の確立やジェンダー規範の変遷等に注目しながら、人々の生活や働き方、生き方に反映される価値観や西洋市民社会の諸制度、都市の形成に関する考察を深めていきます。
・20世紀前半から後半（ヴァイマール共和国の時代から第三帝国、東西ドイツの時代から現代）にかけて、「女性」「弱者」「マイノリティ」がクローズアップされる内容になります。多様性とマージナルなものに対する眼差しの中にこそ、メトロポールとしてのベルリンの魅力が潜んでいると言えるかもしれません。
