-Examine the development of modern German culture from a global perspective, exploring how other cultures are represented in modern Germany.
-Take a critical look at modern globalisation by studying the history of colonialism/imperialism and Orientalism.
-Examine the image of Japan depicted in German literature to gain an objective and critical perspective on one's own culture.
- Develop a deeper understanding of the various types of primary sources that depict different cultures.
Since the 'discovery' of the New World in the early modern period and throughout the subsequent eras of colonialism and imperialism up to the 20th-century wars, Europe has repeatedly depicted and debated images of 'other' non-Western cultures – including Japan – across diverse fields ranging from travel writing and philosophical reflection to literature, art and film. This lecture will primarily trace the evolution of perceptions of other cultures in Germany from the 18th to the 20th century, discussing the self-image of Germany/Europe revealed through these representations of the 'Other'.

近世におけるいわゆる新世界の発見以来、それに続く植民地主義や帝国主義、20世紀の戦争の時代に至るまで、ヨーロッパにおいては、旅行記、哲学的思索から文学や美術、映画など、さまざまな分野で、日本を含む非西洋の〈異文化の他者〉の像が繰り返し描かれ議論とされてきた。本講義では、主にドイツの18世紀〜20世紀の異文化像の変遷をたどり、他者像を通して見えてくるドイツ／ヨーロッパの自己像について議論していく。
