This course examines various characteristics of French society and culture after the French Revolution with Romanticism as a keyword, referring to operas, ballets, and other stage productions created in 19th century France.
What was the original meaning of the adjective “romantic” that we usually use without thinking about it? To begin with, Romanticism in the first half of the 19th century was a total artistic and ideological movement that extended not only to literature but also to painting, opera, ballet, and other performing arts, as well as politics, philosophy, and religion. In this class, we will explore the meaning of Romanticism, a genre that has continued to the present day, using the performing arts of the nineteenth century, namely opera (grand opera) and ballet (romantic ballet), which were subcultures of the time, as clues to explore the meaning of Romanticism. In each class, time will be set aside to watch DVDs of stage performances, but at the same time, the class will cultivate an attitude of critically examining the works with an awareness of the historical nature of 19th century France, so that the class does not end with mere appreciation of the works. As for how the class will proceed, after a few introductory lectures, each student will be asked to set his/her own theme and give a presentation.

授業で取り上げるオペラやバレエなどの舞台作品は、youtubeなどインターネットを使って全編見るようにしてほしい。また、それらの作品で扱われているテーマに関連する同時代の文学作品も適宜紹介するので、なるべく多くの作品に触れるように。なお、各回の予習・復習にはそれぞれ2時間程度を要する。

「ロマンチック」という普段我々が何気なく用いている形容詞は、本来はどのような意味を持っていたのであろうか？そもそも、十九世紀前半のロマン主義は文学のみならず、絵画やオペラ・バレエなどの舞台芸術、さらには政治、哲学、宗教にまで及ぶトータルな芸術・思想運動であり、しかもその影響はフランス国内にとどまらず、国境を越えた汎ヨーロッパ的な文芸思潮でもあった。この授業では、十九世紀の舞台芸術、すなわち当時のサブカルであったオペラ（グランドオペラ）とバレエ（ロマンチック・バレエ）を手掛かりに、現代にまでつながるロマン主義の意味を探る。授業では毎回DVDを使って舞台映像を見る時間を設けるが、同時に単なる鑑賞に終わらないよう、19世紀フランスという歴史性を意識しながら、批評的に作品を検討する態度を養う。授業の進め方に関しては、最初に何回か導入の講義をした後は、学生一人一人が自らテーマを設定して、発表してもらうことになる。また、できれば授業で扱うオペラ、バレエなどの作品を実際に観劇する機会を設けたいと考えている。
