While reading Stendhal's novel, we will consider the turbulent 19th century French society and culture after the French Revolution.
We will peruse Stendhql's Le Rouge et le Noir (1830). The purpose is to learn practically how to read novels and improve story literacy, and at the same time, to deepen the understanding of the turmoil of the nineteenth century French society after the French Revolution. The themes to be covered are diverse, such as social circles, rational marriage, adultery, class system, "distinction", and dandyism, but at least at first I want to value the attitude of enjoying romance novels. As for how the class will proceed, after the first few introductory lectures, each student will be asked to give a presentation on a theme that he/she has set for him/herself. In order to find your own unique theme, please listen carefully to the teacher's talk and other students' presentations, and actively participate in the discussions.

学生の希望があれば、十九世紀フランスにかかわるオペラやバレエなどの舞台芸術を観劇する機会を設けたい。
スタンダールの小説を読みながら、フランス革命後の激動の十九世紀フランス社会および文化について考察する。
While reading Stendhal's novel, we will consider the turbulent 19th century French society and culture after the French Revolution.
スタンダールの『赤と黒』（1830）を精読する。小説の読み方を実践的に学び、物語リテラシーの向上を図ると同時に、フランス革命後の混乱の十九世紀フランス社会についての理解を深めることを目的とする。取り上げる予定のテーマは社交界、理性結婚、姦通、階級社会、卓越化、ダンディズムなど多岐にわたるが、少なくとも最初は何よりも恋愛小説を楽しむ姿勢を大事にしたい。授業の進め方に関しては、最初に何回か導入の講義をした後は、学生一人一人が自分で設定したテーマについて発表してもらうことになる。自分独自のテーマを見つけるためにも、教師の話や他の学生の発表をよく聞いて、積極的にディスカッションに参加してほしい。
