Is marriage happy or unhappy? Let's read and think about marriage as it is portrayed in French literature.
After reviewing the characteristics of each period, such as political marriage under patriarchy etc., we will read the 12th century letters of Héloïse, the 15th century “Fifteen Joys of Marriage”, the 16th century “Tales of Pantagruel”, and other 19th century novels. We will also refer to “The Second Sex” and “The Myth of Femininity,” and consider theoretically what “marriage” means in feminist thought. Some of the texts will be in French. Student presentations will also be made.

結婚は幸せなのか、不幸なのか？ フランス文学に描かれる結婚を読んで、考えてみよう。
Is marriage happy or unhappy? Let's read and think about marriage as it is portrayed in French literature.
家父長制下の政略結婚、ブルジョワ社会の「家庭」概念、現代フランスのPACSや同性婚など、時代ごとの特徴をおさえたうえで、結婚を否定した12世紀のエロイーズの書簡、15世紀の『結婚十五の歓び』、16世紀『パンタグリュエル物語』、その他19世紀小説などを読んでいく。また『第二の性』や『女らしさの神話』などを参照し、フェミニズム思想における「結婚」とは何かも理論的に考えてゆきたい。一部フランス語の文献も使用する。また学生発表を行う。
