Students will read Montaigne’s Essais volume 3 chapter 9 and reflect on “voyage”.
Montaigne is one of the most significant authors of 16th century French renaissance. He conducted deep ruminations such as “What is human?” through vast casual anecdotes. In this class, students will read Essais in detail, while learning about the wartime turbulent era. Montaigne has travelled extensively in Europe and has left travel journals. Students will follow his footsteps and understand his views on foreign countries and cultures. Students will read specified parts before class and should be able to provide their resumes and opinions.

モンテーニュ『エセー』の第3巻第9章を読み、「旅」について考える。
Students will read Montaigne’s Essais volume 3 chapter 9 and reflect on “voyage”.
モンテーニュはフランス・ルネサンスを代表する16世紀の作家で、膨大な随筆において「人間とは何か」という深い洞察を行っている。本講義では戦乱に満ちた時代背景に触れつつ、『エセー』を詳細に読解する。ヨーロッパ各地を旅行したモンテーニュは旅行記も残しているのだが、彼の足跡を辿りつつ、彼の外国観や文明観がどのようなものだったかを考える。学生は、毎回指定の箇所を事前に読み、レジュメや意見提示が行えるようにしておくこと。
