Through literary works, performing arts, and visual images, this course examines the culture and society of the 19th century in France.
The French 19th century was a period in which new, modern values took shape in the wake of two "revolutions" that occurred at the end of the 18th century: the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. In this class, we will explore various aspects of this turbulent period, referring not only to literary works but also to opera, ballet, and other performing arts (this year, mainly opera), which were subcultures of the bourgeoisie of the time. We plan to cover as diverse a range of topics as possible, from the evolution of views on love to changes in the political system. Even though we will be dealing with stage productions, the main focus will be on the social and historical context behind them, so the course will also serve as a study of modern French history. Students are required to submit a comment card at the end of each class. If you do not understand the contents of the class at all, it will be treated as an absence. The following lesson plans are only a guide.

文学作品、舞台芸術、映像などを通して、フランス十九世紀の文化と社会を考察する。
Through literary works, performing arts, and visual images, this course examines the culture and society of the 19th century in France.
フランス十九世紀は、フランス大革命および産業革命という十八世紀末に起こった二つの「革命」を受けて、新しい現代的な価値観が形作られた時代である。この授業では、文学作品はもちろんのこと、当時のブルジョワジーのサブ・カルチャーであったオペラやバレエ等の舞台芸術（今年はおもにオペラ）を参照しながら、この激動の時代の諸相を探っていきたい。恋愛観の変遷から政治体制の変化まで、できるだけ多様なテーマを取り上げる予定である。舞台作品を扱っても、主眼はあくまでその背景にある社会的・歴史的な文脈にあるので、フランス近代史の学習にもなるだろう。また毎回授業の最後にコメント・カードを提出してもらうが、授業の内容をまったく理解していない場合は、欠席扱いとするので注意すること。なお、以下の授業計画はあくまでひとつの目安にすぎない。
