Notes

【Course Objectives】

This course aims to consider French arts from the early 19th century to the mid-20th century through the lens of artistic correspondences. Focusing especially on the relationship between literature and music, it examines notable writers, poets, and musicians, as well as their works, while considering the social context and historical developments of each period.

【Course Contents】

This course focuses on the interrelationship between literature and music from the 19th to the 20th century. It analyzes and compares individual artists’ works within their historical and social contexts, thereby illuminating the complex, cross-disciplinary influence between the two fields. The course structure traces major artistic movements from Romanticism through Symbolism and Impressionism to 20th-century Surrealism, interpreting works by various associated writers and composers. It also examines the mediating role of salon culture in supporting artists’ creative activities and the impact of social conditions, such as war, on the arts. By incorporating a comparative perspective across disciplines, we will reexamine the characteristics of modern French arts, which actively engage with other genres while continually seeking their unique modes of expression.
