“The Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari” is said to have been written between the middle of the 11th century and the 12th century. “The Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari” is regarded as the first collection of short stories in Japan, and its interesting topics, fast pace, and clever narrative development sometimes make us feel as if we are reading a modern short story. By carefully explaining and interpreting the individual tales, we will discuss the structure and meaning of "Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari" as a whole. In the process, we learn how to research basic materials, and how to present and write a paper on Japanese classic literature.
First, an overview of the “The Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari” will be given, so that the students can learn about the references and previous research on the “The Tsutsumi Chūnagon Monogatari”. The class will be conducted in the form of seminar presentations and discussions , so the methodology will be explained. 10 stories will be presented by a designated person. The presenters will compare and contrast various commentaries, conduct the analysis of linguistic expressions, and share their opinions on some specific chosen themes. This will be followed by a discussion to deepen the participants' understanding of the text.

11世紀中頃から12世紀にかけて書かれたといわれている『堤中納言物語』の全編を講読する。日本最初の短編物語集といわれる『堤中納言物語』は、話題の面白さやテンポのよさ、巧妙な物語展開からみて近代短編小説を読んでいるような錯覚に陥ることがある。個々の物語を丁寧に分析・考察することで、総体としての『堤中納言物語』について考えていく。その過程で、古典研究の基礎的な資料の方法（変体仮名の学び）、発表の仕方、レポート作成について学ぶ。

まず『堤中納言物語』について概説することで、『堤中納言物語』の参考文献や先行研究について知る。演習形式の授業であるため、演習の進め方について説明する。『堤中納言物語』のそれぞれの話について、発表担当者を決めて発表する。発表者は、諸注釈書を比較検討し、表現分析や自ら設定したテーマに基づき考察したことを発表する。その後、ディスカッションをおこなうことで参加者みなの読みを深めていく。
