【Course Objectives】

Through close readings of early modern pseudo-classical works, students will learn methods for approaching Japanese classical literal materials and conducting basic surveys of literature, and will understand the significance of classical grammar and the characteristics of early modern pseudo-classical works.

【Course Contents】

Taking Tamagatsuma by Motoori Norinaga as its subject, this class will use dictionaries and prior research to learn methods for carefully reading and interpreting Japanese classical literary materials. In particular, the class will study the rudiments of traditional Japanese literature and language research from reading of its content, paying attention to differences from the classical grammar and vocabulary that students learned up through high school. After communicating basic matters in lecture format, the class will assign reading sections to participants, conduct presentations in the exercise format, and deepen students' understanding through discussions of the whole.
