By reading The Sarashina Diary, I hope to become familiar with Heian‑period kana diaries and use it as a starting point for considering the characteristics of that genre.I would also like students to acquire knowledge of Heian‑period culture, the lifestyles of the aristocracy of the time, and their connections with literature.
A close reading of The Sarashina Diary, a seminal work among kana diaries of the Heian period, will be undertaken. In conjunction with this textual analysis, the course will address a broad range of related issues, including the defining characteristics of kana diary literature, its interrelationship with monogatari narratives, and the cultural milieu of the period. Reexamining this work prompts us to reflect on the very nature of kana diaries, and it also leads us to consider their relationship to narrative literature.As this is a seminar-style class, As the format of the seminar will depend in part on the number of participants,

『更級日記』を読むことで、平安時代の仮名日記に親しみ、そのジャンルの特質を考える端緒としたい。あわせて平安時代の文化や当時の貴族たちのライフスタイル、さらに文学とのかかわりなども考えたい。

平安時代を代表する仮名日記作品である『更級日記』を精読する。あわせて仮名日記の特質や物語との関係、時代の文化など幅広く触れ、考えたい。この作品を検証することは、仮名日記とは何かというテーマを考えることになり、また物語との関係を考えることにもつながってくる。演習の授業なので、受講者に発表する機会をもうけたい。演習の方法については、受講者の数ともかかわるので、あらためて授業時に相談したい。
