The uta-awase was a poetic contest in which poets divided into left and right factions competed with each other through verse to determine superiority. Twelve poets, including Fujiwara no Teika, Fujiwara no Ietaka, and Jien, participated in Roppyakuban-uta-awase hosted by Fujiwara no Yoshitsune. This seminar aims to deepen understanding of waka literature through close reading of this uta-awase.
Roppyakuban-uta-awase offers numerous points of interest, including its unique poetic themes, the contrasting styles of the old and new schools, the heated debates, and Fujiwara no Toshinari's high-quality critical commentary. It is a work that can be analysed from various angles, such as expressive intent, the presentation of poetic themes, and methods of waka criticism. This seminar will focus on the Four Seasons section of the Roppyakuban-uta-awase. Following an introductory overview of the work and presentation methods, students will deliver presentations followed by discussion.

歌人が左方右方に分かれて歌を詠み合い、優劣を競う催しを歌合という。藤原良経が主催した『六百番歌合』は、藤原定家、同家隆、慈円ら12人の歌人が参加した歌合である。本演習では、この歌合を精読することを通して、和歌文学に対する理解を深めることを目標とする。

『六百番歌合』は、独特の歌題設定、新旧両派の詠風の違い、白熱した議論、藤原俊成による質の高い判詞など見るべき点が多く、表現意図、歌題の表し方、和歌批評の方法など様々な切り口で分析することができる作品である。本演習では、『六百番歌合』の四季部を取り上げ、最初に作品の概要と発表方法を説明した後、受講生による発表とディスカッションを行う。
