【Course Objectives】

The purpose of this course is to experience the appeal of Japanese dictionaries and to understand their significance as objects of academic consideration. In addition, through thinking about possible innovations in incorporating academic considerations into lectures for university students, students will be able to critically examine existing academic articles and books for the general public.

【Course Contents】

Japanese-language dictionaries are the crystallization of the wisdom of the times and are a subject that has held the interest of many people beyond the scope of a hobby. Academically, it is the subject of much discussion in lexicology and lexicology, and much has been revealed about the reading of historical dictionaries, clarification of their actual conditions, and their influence on other dictionaries. As for modern Japanese dictionaries, many discussions have been conducted on their use in educational settings and from the standpoint of compilers, and various events are planned and executed in conjunction with sales promotion activities. Many books for the general public on Japanese dictionaries have also been published, and a variety of information on Japanese dictionaries is disseminated on the Internet. Although some of them are not academic in nature, some of them have led to information sharing and discussions at symposiums and other events from various perspectives, such as the relationship with electronic dictionaries and how to use AI.
Although there has been much information dissemination using Japanese-language dictionaries, including novels and the development of visual media based on them, we would like to consider again what is possible from an academic perspective. To this end, the main focus is to first organize the current situation from the perspective of academics and, based on this, to consider what kind of class developments are possible using Japanese-language dictionaries (all of them, including modern and past ones).

Students will be asked to determine an academic theme related to Japanese dictionaries and to consider the materials used to sublimate it into the content of 14 x 100-minute university lectures (assuming Literature Lecture 341, etc.). We will discuss what kind of explanations and presentation of materials will be necessary, what will make it easier to understand, and how to ensure not only clarity but also academic accuracy.
Of course, it is also important to pursue a certain degree of entertainment value in this field, so depending on the situation, it may be possible to create a Japanese dictionary specialized for words with "pre" or "cure" in a total of 14 lectures. After discussing the overall direction of the course, we will discuss individual topics.
Although there is no obligation for those who attend this seminar to attend the relevant lecture the following year, we would like to implement the final lesson plans the following year, as long as the academic nature of the content, no matter how bizarre, can be guaranteed.
