In this course, we will read the Japanese dictionary “Wakun no Shiori," which was written in the mid-Edo period. First, we will learn about the approach to dictionary research and the overview of “Wakun no Shiori." Then, we will critically examine its content from a modern perspective. Since we will be deciphering books from the Edo period, we will also study the basics of cursive script, but that is not the main focus. Instead, we will investigate and discuss the content written in the dictionary, the ingenuity seen in the word explanations, the cited examples, and the influence of its structure on other dictionaries.

近世中期に著された国語辞書『倭訓栞』を読みます。
まず、辞書研究の在り方や『倭訓栞』の概要について学んだ後に、その内容を現代的視点から批判的に検討します。江戸時代の本を読み解くので、崩し字の基礎学習も行いますがそれがメインではなく、辞書に書かれた内容・語釈に見られる工夫・引用された用例の検討・構成の辞書への影響、といったことを調査してディスカッションしていきます。
In this course, we will read the Japanese dictionary “Wakun no Shiori," which was written in the mid-Edo period.
