In this course, we will focus on the Esopo no fabules (1593, Amacusa), a literary work from the Christian (Kirishitan) documents that was used as a textbook in the Colégio, and analyze it from a linguistic perspective with the following objectives:
1 To understand the historical context of the compilation of Kirishitan documents and their characteristics as resources.
2 To learn methods for reading Kirishitan documents, including necessary procedures and points of caution for interpretation.
3 To recognize the linguistic significance and unique features of Kirishitan documents.
The Amacusa edition of Esopo no fabulas (held by the British Library) is a literary work from the Jesuit mission press (Kirishitan ban), bound together with the Feiqe no monogatari (Amacusa edition of Heike Monogatari) and Kinkushu.
In this course, we will analyze the Esopo no fabulas from a linguistic perspective by dividing sections among presenters to understand its unique features. Participants will read and interpret their assigned sections while consulting essential resources for studying Kirishitan documents, such as dictionaries from the Jesuit mission press, contemporary lexicons, later academic studies, and relevant databases. Additionally, they will investigate and present their findings on points of interest or questions that arise during their analysis.
It is worth noting that many Kirishitan documents, including the Esopo no fabulas covered in this course, are printed solely in Romanized type. These Romanized texts, which do not employ kanji or kana typesetting, can appear challenging to read at first glance and differ from modern Romanized Japanese conventions.
In this course, the focus is not merely on reading the Esopo no fabulas, but also on actively engaging with Kirishitan documents to understand their distinctive characteristics.

本授業では、キリシタン資料の中でも、コレジオにおいて教科書として使用されていた文学書である天草版伊曽保物語を国語学的な視点から読解する事で、次を目指す。
１ 基本的なキリシタン資料の編纂背景、資料としての特徴を知る。
２ キリシタン資料の読み方、資料読解に必要な手順、留意点を学ぶ。
３ キリシタン資料の国語学的な意義や特徴を知る。

天草版伊曽保物語(大英図書館蔵)は、天草版平家物語・金句集と合綴されている、キリシタン版の文学書である。
本授業では、この天草版伊曽保物語を、発表者で分担しながら国語学的な観点から読解し、その特徴を理解する。担当範囲の内容を、キリシタン資料を読む際に必要な資料(キリシタン版の辞書類や同時代の辞書、後世の研究書、データベースなど)を確認しながら読解していくとともに、確認が興味・疑問を抱いた点について、それぞれ調査をして発表をしてもらう。
なお、今回扱う天草版伊曽保物語をはじめ、キリシタン資料の中には、ローマ字活字のみで印刷されているローマ字本が多く存在する。漢字仮名活字が使用されていないため、一見すると読みにくく、現代のローマ字表記とも異なっている箇所も存在する。
本授業では、天草版伊曽保物語をただ読むというだけではなく、キリシタン資料を実際に読み、その特徴を理解する事も目指す。
