In this course, we will read and prepare annotations on the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam, a Japanese–Portuguese bilingual dictionary compiled and published by Christians during the Age of Discoveries (1603–1604, printed in Nagasaki), using it as primary source material. Through this work, the course aims to achieve the following objectives:
1 To clarify certain aspects of the actual state of the headwords included in the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam.
2 To analyze the descriptive format of the definitions in the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam.
3 To understand the background of compilation and the characteristics of basic Kirishitan documents as historical materials.
4 To learn how to read Kirishitan documents, as well as the procedures and points to be noted that are necessary for source analysis.
The Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam (1603–1604, printed in Nagasaki) is a Japanese–Portuguese bilingual dictionary compiled and published primarily by missionaries engaged in Christian evangelization in Japan during the Age of Discoveries. Among the Christian lexicographical works, the VVocabulario da lingoa do Iapam is a representative and exceptionally large-scale dictionary, containing approximately 33,000 Japanese headwords. This scale is remarkable even when compared with contemporary Japanese dictionaries and Portuguese dictionaries, and the work is widely recognized as an important source for the study of medieval Japanese.
Nevertheless, many aspects of the dictionary—such as its headwords, the manner in which definitions are written, and the usage examples it contains—remain insufficiently investigated and analyzed. Rather than using the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam merely as a tool for reading other materials, this course aims to read the Vocabulário da Língoa do Japão itself, to analyze it directly, and to produce annotations.
Participants will divide the text of the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam among themselves and conduct tasks such as investigating usage examples of headwords and examining the descriptive style of definitions, on the basis of which they will prepare annotations. In doing so, they will also consult reference materials necessary for reading Kirishitan sources, including other Kirishitan dictionaries, contemporary dictionaries, later scholarly studies, and databases.
In addition, each participant will further investigate points that they find questionable or particularly interesting and present the results of their research.
It should also be noted that many Kirishitan sources, including the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam, were printed solely in Roman type, without the use of kanji or kana. As a result, these Romanized texts may at first appear difficult to read, and in some respects they differ from modern systems of romanization. Another aim of this course is therefore to read Kirishitan sources firsthand and to gain an understanding of their distinctive features.
In addition, the course schedule may be subject to change depending on the number of participants.

本授業では、大航海時代、キリシタンによって編纂・刊行された日本語・ポルトガル語対訳辞書であるキリシタン版『日葡辞書』(1603・1604、長崎刊)を、資料として読み、注釈を作成していく。それにより、次を目指す。
１ 日葡辞書に掲載されている見出し語の実態の一端を明らかにする。
２ 日葡辞書の語釈の記述形式を分析する。
３ 基本的なキリシタン資料の編纂背景、資料としての特徴を知る。
４ キリシタン資料の読み方、資料読解に必要な手順、留意点を学ぶ。
In this course, we will read and prepare annotations on the Vocabulario da lingoa do Iapam, a Japanese–Portuguese bilingual dictionary compiled and published by Christians during the Age of Discoveries (1603–1604, printed in Nagasaki), using it as primary source material. キリシタン版『日葡辞書』(1603・1604、長崎刊)は、大航海時代に日本でキリスト教布教を行った宣教師たちを中心に編纂・刊行された、日本語・ポルトガル語の対訳辞書である。日葡辞書はキリシタン版の中でも代表的且つ大部な辞書であり、その日本語見出し語数は約33,000語にものぼる。この規模は、同時代の日本辞書・ポルトガル辞書の中でも、特筆して大部なものであり、中世日本語研究を中心に、重要な中世資料として知られる。
しかし、そこに収められている見出し語・語釈記述・用例など、未だ調査・分析すべき点は少なくない。本授業では、「日葡辞書を使って何か別の資料を読む」のではなく、「日葡辞書それ自体を読み」、日葡辞書を分析し、注釈をつけていく事を目的とする。
日葡辞書本文を発表者で分担し、日葡辞書の見出し語の用例調査、語釈記述の確認などの作業をし、注釈をつけてもらう。その際、キリシタン資料を読む際に必要な資料(キリシタン版の他の辞書類や同時代の辞書、後世の研究書、データベースなど)を確認してもらう。
また、その中で疑問を抱いた点・興味を持った点について、各人で更に調査をして、発表をしてもらう。
なお、日葡辞書をはじめ、キリシタン資料の中には、ローマ字活字のみで印刷されているローマ字本が多く存在する。漢字仮名活字が使用されていないため、一見すると読みにくく、現代のローマ字表記とも異なっている箇所も存在する。本授業では、キリシタン資料を実際に読み、その特徴を理解する事も目指す。
また、受講者の人数にあわせ、授業計画は変更の可能性がある。
