Students will read the Ukifune chapter of the Uji-Jujo part of Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), and deepen their understanding of the story.
Ukifune, the final heroine of Genji Monogatari, is the wife of Kaoru but is in an adulterous relationship with her sister's husband, Niou no Miya. Caught between two men, she becomes upset and is driven to throwing herself into the water. While reading the original text of the Ukifune chapter, students will investigate the world of words spoken through waka poetry and prose.

『源氏物語』の第三部の宇治十帖の浮舟巻を取り上げて読み、物語への理解を深める。
Students will read the Ukifune chapter of the Uji-Jujo part of Genji Monogatari (The Tale of Genji), and deepen their understanding of the story.
『源氏物語』の最後のヒロイン浮舟は、薫の妻でありながら姉の夫匂宮と密通、めくるめく愛欲の時を過ごしながらも、二人の男の板挟みとなって惑乱し、入水へと追い詰められていく。浮舟巻の原文を読みながら、和歌や散文によって語られる言葉の世界を探究する。
