【Course Objectives】

Students will closely read prominent scenes, and gain understanding of the characteristics of setsuwa born in Japan's Middle Ages. At the same time, they will deepen their understanding of various perspectives and methods for interpreting medieval prose literature.

【Course Contents】

After a general overview of the various collections of folktales from the Middle Ages, we will read a variety of tales. For each class there will be a theme set, and from one specific tale as an introduction, we will continue with reading other related tales. As necessary, materials from other literary genres, painting, among other arts will be referred to and brought up, as part of fostering an understanding of the world of folktales in both horizontal extension and its depth in a three dimensional manner.
